It was love at first sight. After tasting Barolo, King Carlo Alberto of Savoy is said not to have been able to resist and, in order to secure adequate supplies of that superfine Nebbiolo, he decided to buy the castle of Verduno, where General Staglieno, an expert oenologist, made a first-class Barolo. The Savoy sovereign was only one of the first to be convinced of the value of that wine, today produced in a limited area of the Langhe but known throughout the world. Grappa could only follow in the wine’s footsteps, becoming a benchmark for the ‘dry Piedmontese’.

In 2001 it won the only gold medal awarded to a grappa in Bordeaux.
